I’ve just finished reading “WTF, Evolution?”. Highly recommended.
Relevant excerpt: “Look, things happen. Mistakes are made. Animals that Evolution built for life on land get swept out to sea in storms and then wash up on volcanic islands where there’s nothing around for them to eat but rocks.
What is Evolution supposed to do in that case? Just let them die? Of course not. Evolution is all about flexibility. Evolution is all about making do.
And if that means forcing a cold-blooded iguana to dive into frigid ocean water and graze on algae so full of sodium that he has to sneeze the excess saltwater out his nose, well then, so be it.
Nobody said adaptation was pretty.”
